The Battle of the Somme in 1916 and the heavy fighting during the First World War left an indelible mark on the Somme department in northern France. Throughout the four years of the war, the largely static front line ran through the eastern part of the department.
After the war ended, parts of this region became part of the so-called Zone rouge: In these main combat zones, villages and settlements were com pletely destroyed, the lan d scape was rav - aged by trench war fare, and the soil was contami nated with remnants of
munitions and poison gas. Today, the region is home to one of the most impressive memorial landscapes of the First World War.
