Bridging Histories – International Summer Camp Ahrensbök
Deutschland
Remember. Exchange. Create.
During the international summer encounter "Bridging Histories" at the Ahrensbök Memorial, you and other young people from various European countries will actively shape remembrance and engage with a historical site dedicated to addressing National Socialist crimes.
Together, you will support maintenance and preservation work on the memorial grounds, helping to ensure that this place remains visible, accessible, and alive. In parallel, you will participate in workshops, discussions, and creative projects that explore the history of Ahrensbök. The site exemplifies several forms of National Socialist violence: an early concentration camp, forced labor, and a death march during the final days of the war.
Ahrensbök illustrates how diverse and omnipresent violence was under National Socialism. At the same time, the summer encounter offers space for personal perspectives: You will exchange experiences and questions, learn from one another, and build bridges across different countries, cultures, and life realities.
Alongside the joint work, there will be plenty of time for social activities and leisure. Planned excursions include a trip to Lübeck as well as beach days on the Baltic Sea. The shared activities and international exchange make the encounter a special experience beyond the historical content.
The summer encounter offers you the opportunity to experience history hands-on, discover new perspectives, and exchange ideas with other young people about remembrance, democracy, and human rights.
The camp language is English.
The project is organized in cooperation with the Ahrensbök Memorial and is funded by the environmental lottery Bingo! (Schleswig-Holstein) and the German Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (Child and Youth Plan of the Federal Government).
