Somme 110: A shared history - a common remembrance | L'histoire partagée, la mémoire commune

On 1 July 1916, the Battle of the Somme (France) began, with France seeking to push back German troops with the support of the United Kingdom. More than three million soldiers fought each other until November 1916. In the end, 1.2 million soldiers were killed, with only minor territorial gains for France. The victims remain unforgotten, and the scars from bomb craters and trenches are still visible in the terrain today.

On the occasion of the 110th anniversary, we meet with young people from France and Germany in Péronne for a week. At historical sites, in museums and at war graves of the nations involved, we learn what makes the Battle of the Somme so significant and how it is remembered today. We will actively participate in the commemorative ceremonies on 1st July and discover differences in the cultures of remembrance in the countries.

We will communicate in English, French and also a little bit German within the group. We will discover French and German culture and forge friendships.
