Against forgetting - 80 years after Holocaust in Hungary

Our international youth exchange in Budapest will focus on the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, the liberation from National Socialism and the consequences of the Holocaust, which we will explore through local history.

Working with historical sources is an important part of our programme. We will study video testimonies of Holocaust survivors and conduct individual research in the Visual History Archive of the USC Shoah Foundation. We will visit important historical sites in Budapest and the surrounding area, including the old Jewish quarter, the Shoe Memorial, Memento Park and the German war cemetery in Budaörs. This will deepen our understanding of both global and local history. As part of the encounter, we will create a travelling exhibition for which we will produce artworks inspired by the testimonies of Holocaust survivors and our own experiences during the week. We will also create a podcast for which we will take on different roles and document our experiences and insights.

The focus of the exchange is on peer learning, which encourages young people from different backgrounds to share their perspectives, engage in discussions and learn from each other's interpretation of history. By working together on creative projects, visiting local historical sites and learning about personal stories, we develop our critical thinking skills and a deeper understanding of historical narratives, memory and responsibility.
