Against forgetting - The suffering of Soviet prisoners of war

After the attack on the Soviet Union in 1941, the Wehrmacht captured around 5.7 million soldiers from the Red Army. More than 3 million of them died in captivity – one of the greatest war crimes committed by the Nazis. Although Soviet prisoners of war represent the second largest group of victims of the Nazis, they are underrepresented in remembrance culture. During our German-Bosnian-French youth exchange, we examine why they were treated so badly and how the Soviet Union and Russia have dealt with and continue to deal with these victims of Nazi persecution. We visit places that raise awareness of their suffering and death and that strengthen remembrance.
In workshops, we acquire knowledge and skills to counter racism and historical distortion today. Through language animation and team-building activities, we strengthen our cohesion and experience cultural diversity.
